The real Old Bill in Bowness?

This photo is entitled "The Kaiser in Bowness 1900" but I can't make head or tail of it. It does suggest that the need for security and body guards was much less then than it is now

If the Austrians had got their bodyguards sorted out the Great War might never have been...

I can't see a Tank, a double-decker bus, or a cartoon character in the picture. There's a bloke who looks a bit like Kaiser Bill, though. He stayed at Ambleside in the Lake District on a couple of occasions, and a bungalow was built for him to stay in at Martindale, near Ullswater, in 1912. It's still there and can be rented for holidays. I think we should have the Landships Christmas Party there this year.

Perhaps he was a closet Wordsworth enthusiast! Somehow I don't think so - he probably just liked rain and mist.
