Mk IV Male Sponsons

Hi,

I recently purchased Emhar's 1/35th scale Mk IV Male. Normally I model WWII onwards but have always hankered after having a WWI tank. Anyway, having purchased the beast I then saw Terry Ashley's review in PMMS and noted his comments about the Sponsons - how the kit ones are at right angles to the hull instead of being angled (if that makes sense)! Now I know that the darn things are incorrrect I cannot even begin to consider making it unless I can fix them. Scratchbuilding is not my strength but as I am pretty certain that no after market kit exists to correct them I don't seem to have much choice. My question is............ does anyone have any plans to show how to convert the existing sponsons or scratchbuild new ones?
Any help would be appreciated

As to how to do it, I don't know. But George Bradford's free preview plan of the Tank Mark V shows the male sponsons. Although George's plan contains some small errors, I believe the sponsons are good. And the Mark IV and Mark V used the same sponsons. So the plan should show you where to make changes.

You shouldn't have any trouble cutting and changing the angle. Might even be able to use the existing rear sections and doors with just a little shimming up. try it before you invest a lot of cash in aftermarket.

Hi all,

I had a look at the Emhar Tadpole sponsons, I presume they have the same problem too?
But, changing the angle, won't you losing the riveting on the edge? And what about the ball mount of the machine gun, that will come closer to the edge then?

Hi Kieffer,

Yes, I think you are certainly right about losing the rivets (although those I can replace) but the ball mount for the Lewis is another problem altogether. Do I attempt it or just live with the problem? I notice on Loe Stener's excellent model shop website that there is a company that makes aftermarket resin parts for Emhar WWi tanks (can't remember the name of the manufacturer at the moment) and they seem to do everything but replacement sponsons.....I cannot believe that no one has thought of doing these in before in 1/35.

Hi Andy!

that sponson is a rivet counters night mare! By changing the angle and replacing the vertical row on the edge, you're losing 1 rivet on the horizontal row...
The pistol port (which I think is already on the wrong spot) has to shift too...
I hope I can concentrate myself on my work today!

It starts as a trickle of sand. Little by little it turns into an avalanche!

The number of changes that have to be made to the Emhar male sponsons almost add up to a total scratch build. It's been fixed in 1/72 with the Matador sponsons, but in 1/35 I think there isn't anything.

Maybe you could live with, and learn to love, the faults.

Maybe you could get the Interus Mark V kit, just for its sponson. (But wouldn't that leave...)

Or, maybe you could scratch build two 1/35 male sponsons, and then make a mould from them and go into business selling good sponsons!

Hi Andy


Hans van oerle Has plans for the MKIV sponsons Male and Female. They are in 1/76 but could readily be scaled up. (There are already some plans to be found on this site from him in the section on converting the Airfix MKI Male)
