 Gentlemen,

Does anyone know what the appropiate colour for painting a 194 mm Grand puissance Filloux SP GUN would be? I basically agree with Mr. Kempf in the fact that no photos of this SP exist but those with the gun sporting a single colour, I guess it would be LIGHT GRAY or some hue of GREEN.

WHAT WOULD BE THE HUMBROL/ TAMIYA/OTHER  EXACT MATCH?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE,

Eduardo Mamoretti.

I don't know, but this is a genuine colour photo of a French railway gun during WW1, so I imagine the camouflage can be taken as indicative:

How about building it with a mortier 280? This interesting photo has three different guns lined up (I'm not sure what the middle one is - a 220 or 240?):

By the way, Pathe News (as linked by Tim Rigsby, IIRC) has a clip of the French SPGs on the move:

http://www.britishpathe.com/

I think if you enter the reference number on the left you'll find it:

1041.12 | MIGHTY FRENCH MOBILE GUNS (1:09:33:00 - 1:10:38:00) 04/04/1940

THANK YOU ROGER,

It was very kind of You, I have sent you  an email just a few minutes ago.

The railway gun is NICE, but I wonder if the size of the gun has to do with the nature of the cammo... May be Peter Kempf was rigth when he suggested heavy artillery patterns...

keep in contact, Eduardo

...color photography in 1918 ???   ... not likely....   perhaps what we see is a "colored" photograph; a quite common marketing practice at the time.

Yes, hand-tinting photos was common, but they usually stick out a mile. However, there was colour photography during the Great War - the Lumiere brothers marketed their Autochrome colour photographic process in 1907. It used glass plates, which is why one never sees colour action shots. Nevertheless, there are quite a lot of colour photos from the Great War using that process. Unsurprisingly, the Lumieres having been French most are of French subjects (hence the presence of a French railway gun in a colour photo is not to be wondered at).

Have a look at this site (http://www.poiemadesign.com/wwi/).

The photo of the African soldiers on this page is especially striking: http://www.poiemadesign.com/wwi/html/ww_i_h_0.html

The middle gun is a 220mm howitzer; it was solely a prototype and never saw service, unlike the 194mm GPF gun and the 280mm howitzer ('mortar') (these last were all converted to 194mm GPF form post war). As for camouflage the basic color for French artillery and vehicles was 'vert armée' a sort of dark green (see the photo of the 370mm railroad howitzer and take a look at the green parts for a rough idea. Otherwise camouflage was pretty haphazard as it was hand applied (the lack of uniformity continued through 1940.), but the usual colors were pale sand, medium brown and the base color of the above mentioned 'vert armée'. Sometimes black was used to outline the colors.

Gentlemen,

Interesting points of view and commentaries,(valuable pics and links indeed).

I am working on the theory of a single-coloured beast, green or dark blueish grey,

(open to ideas...) While I have recieved some lovely drawings from MR.  ROGER TODD,

which I greatly appreciatte.

If its any help to you, all the 194mm GPFs I have seen in photos seemed to have all been of one color, probably that dark army green ('vert armée').

I have painted it in a mix 90% humbrol grey 156 plus 10% medium blue. Let´s see what will occur after the final weathering process.

Best regards to all fellows,

Eduardo

Stunning scratchbuild !!!
You did a very nice job, Eduardo.
The camo colour looks nice. I will try to find an equivalent one to use it "out of the bottle".
