Have seen it before, but worth noting there are two: one centre, one on rt.

I wonder who took the photo? Is it combat or training/moving up?

The Atlantic describes this as an 'Official German Photograph' taken in a village near Rheims.

The same picture appears in David Fletcher's Tanks and Trenches (1994) with a caption reading "The sinister shapes of Hagen and Schnuck, photographed in a smoke screen at Villers-Bretonneux".

Is nothing simple?

Would have been tricky for Hagen to have made an appearance at Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918 - it wasn't delivered until May 1918.

Training before the action at Rheims on 1 June 1918 sounds more plausible.

Regards,

Charlie

Neither Reims nor Villers-Bretonneux, picture most probably taken in the vicinity of Bertry (south-east of Cambrai) in early August 1918. Belongs to the series 'Summer Exercise of Abt. 2' featuring Wagen 504, 525, 528 and 563.
