Wooden Tanks
Permalink

During the war and up to world war two various wooden mockups were made for crew training, recognition and target practice or distraction purposes.

Thought it would be a good idea to gather a lot of these together as they are quite interesting but generally just a side issue or ignored completely.

Bulgaria circa 1920: http://i.imgur.com/DXeGEmH.jpg Former training tank

China 1937: http://i.imgur.com/BHmUWri.jpg for deception

China circa 1930: http://i.imgur.com/BgcbSH7.jpg Japanese troops? with two deception tanks

Japan date not known: http://i.imgur.com/ko4PmKw.jpg - apprently lost in transit at some point

Metz 1932: http://i.imgur.com/1wu2S35.jpg Repurposed mockup looks like it is now a hen coop/dog house

School on Engineers, Kensington Gardens circa 1917/1918 for camouflage practice; Framework: http://i.imgur.com/5a9Kw1T.jpg http://i.imgur.com/vPOc9KS.jpg Painting: http://i.imgur.com/i6KnayJ.jpg Snazzy Dazzle patterns: http://i.imgur.com/FgP1OaC.jpg

UK: Training mockup for Royal Marines? http://i.imgur.com/BjBgLGf.jpg

USA: 1918? http://i.imgur.com/s09foha.jpg troops pushing a mockup M1917

Italy (somewhere in the North): 1918 - British rhomboid mockup used for training http://i.imgur.com/n0O0cu0.jpg (in the background some blighter has shot down a German plane)

Berlin 1927: Not quite military but an FT-17 crafted out of soap as some salesmanship at the international soap exhibition http://i.imgur.com/Vl3M3fD.jpg

Date/Location not known #1: http://i.imgur.com/tXlr8Sc.jpg Male tank with FT-17 mockups

Date/Location not known #2: http://i.imgur.com/3pTYNU3.jpg and possibly the same one here http://i.imgur.com/iAnXnbv.jpg and here http://i.imgur.com/VugZAAE.jpg http://i.imgur.com/MijwqBb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/VAjW2uW.jpg

Edit: same tank - http://i.imgur.com/ePXqfNS.jpg

Another unknown one but looks like rustic setting: http://i.imgur.com/Wjh5rlK.jpg

German mockup of British tank with wheels: http://i.imgur.com/SdRK7LG.jpg

April 1918 (helpfully dated) German mockup of Rhomboid: http://i.imgur.com/SkXAWab.jpg and I think the same one from a different angle with attached postcard message on the back http://i.imgur.com/2D6Ev6b.jpg

This one could be the same as 'Unknown #2 above' : http://i.imgur.com/c1dU7KN.jpg

Date/Location unknown #3: 'rough and ready' http://i.imgur.com/KmYs8SN.jpg

Date/Location unknown #4: Looks like canvas skin; http://i.imgur.com/8DRl3zO.jpg

On tracks? - maybe some kind of pulled target?: http://i.imgur.com/gjnSLJm.jpg

German troops checking out an FT-17 mockup: http://i.imgur.com/ub2X7De.jpg

I'm sure there must be lots more out there or even more shots of these ones.

Bulgaria 1918: http://i.imgur.com/owVACd4.jpg Soldiers taking a break from learning about tank layout - (bullet holes in the canvas?)
I notice a lot of distinctive walking canes too

Edit: better version without the mess across the image: http://i.imgur.com/Ei7SwwN.jpg
