Mark V tank
Permalink

Both Meng and Takom mark V kits have angled arm attached from the rear of the drivers cab down to top hull of the tank, slightly offset from the centre line.

Does anyone have any idea what this is. Having studied photographs of preserved tanks in UK and Russia and this attachment is not present. Likewise I studied

dozens of photographs of Mark V's in action but can find no clear picture of this attachment and it does not appear on any plans I have.

Is it possible that this is used in conjunction with the crib because if the crib is attached by chain to a central point at the bottom rear of the cab this

attachment would be in the way of the chain.

Hope someone can throw some light on this.

Geoff

Hello Geoff,

I have also wondered what that thing was. I have a picture of two Mark V's with it clearly attached. The two Mark V's are on parade in Koln.Mark V's Koln.jpg

Maybe this helps? The purpose?

I was thinking about some protection for the muffler in case the unditching beam was stored sideways on the roof or when the beam would become detached and fall of the rails so not to damage the muffler? But I am only speculating .....smile

Best regards,

Willem

And ... Geoff,

here are two pictures of the Mark V's in Smolensk on display.

One of the two has that "device" (the red circle), the other does not have it. That adds to the mysterie .....

Best regards,

Willem

Thanks for the input. Not seen the Koln photo before although I have seen others taken at the same time.

I am have been tempted to remove the arm but if I then found out that it was something to do with the Crib after painting the model I'd be pretty upset.

I think I will omit the crib from the Female I am currently building and save it for the Takom male I intend to build in hopes that by then I will have found the solution

Thanks again

Geoff
