75mm WW1 Turkish Field Gun
Permalink

Would anyone know what the colour of a 75mm Turkish field gun used in WW1 at the battle of Beershebah 1917 would  have been.. our R.S.L. is wanting to restore one and would seriously like it to be as authentic a restoration as possible. I have attached a  photo of this gun taken after it was restored from a very dilapidated state but they did not know what colour to paint it so they painted it the same as the German anti-aircraft gun in the nearby park...we have everything in place to do the restoration again but are lacking the one important thing.. the colour... thank you in advance for any help we may receive...

Probably a pale sand colour. There is one gun I know of which has the remains of its original Ottoman paint - a 15cm versuchsHaubitze in the AWM storage area at Mitchell. This was captured at Damascus in 1918 and, as far as I know, has sat in storage since it got to Australia. I believe the standard Ottoman paint colour for Palestine was this sand colour. Be careful when you try to match the colour - chrome-yellow pigments were unstable back in WW1 and weren't used in paints so yellow pigments were much more ochre in colour than the modern bright yellow. I've got some more images of the 15cm around - PM me with an email address and I'll send them.

Which Krupp gun is this one? An image of the top of the breech would enable me to identify the order batch it was in.

Here are some guns which approximate the colour of the 15cm in Canberra

367 - Stanthorpe, Qld

376 - Seymour, Vic

616 - Bandiana, Vic

153 (Rumanian) - Windsor, NSW
