Found an image I hadn't seen before of the Schneider 220mm SPG in 1921 Revue d'Artillerie. The scan of the journal was badly distorted and the paper

yellowed - I tried to fix these problems while retaining at least some of the useful information.

The vehicle really does look like a tracked frame wrapped around the 220mm howitzer. My guess is that it would have to be accompanied by something

like a Schneider CD to carry the ammunition - somewhat like the WW2 German Karl-Morser.

I have that in Hogg's Allied Artillery of World War One. pp102-3.

The Saint-Chamond was articulated, but Hogg describes the Schneider as "truly self-propelled." No specific mention of arrangements for ammunition.

Don't have that book.

Noticed that the transport position of the gun seems to be the same as the towed version of the 220mm gun.

The barrel is retained in the receiver and the whole assembly is moved back up the recoil track.

Found a reference to the Schneider Autopropulseur that there were 3 SPGs in storage at the start of WW2 - they

were renovated and 2 were mobilised in June 1940 but saw no action. 

Not sure about the St-Chamond description - the gun vehicle had its own electric motors powered from the tractor vehicle.

Perhaps an analogous vehicle was the Porsche designed B-Zug artillery tractor although the St-Chamond gun vehicle was

semi-autonomous - it could be steered independently of the tractor.
