After The End Of Fighting In Europe
Permalink

Ever had to read "The Great Gatsby" in school?  It referred to how Gatz, before he became Gatsby, was a US Army major during World War One and was stationed in Europe after the fighting stopped.  Since Germany was not overrun during the war itself, I wondered what happened in Germany.  Did Allied troops occupy any part of Germany, or what actually was done?

The Allies occupied parts of Germany, but not in the same way as 1945. There were bridgeheads across the Rhine - I can't remember exactly where. Cologne? Somebody will correct me. But 11/11/1918 was a ceasefire. Occupation of parts of Germany was one of the conditions of surrender. The Allies didn't march into Berlin and install a government  - all that sort of thing was sorted out in the Versailles treaty, in 1919. That is when the Ruhr was put under French control, for example. But fighting went on in Germany - with tanks - after the fighting at the front had stopped.

There's lots of literature on the subject. Have a google.

Here we are. This isn't bad:

I am about to start reading "The Vanquished: Why the First World War failed to end, 1917-1923" by Robert Gerwarth. Looking forward to it.
