Mk I Supply Tank 712 Photos?... Dodo's doodahs
Permalink

Hmmm, now the 'painting' season is upon us I've decided to resurrect the modelling project, and any begininng to doubt a couple of supply tank features which may or may not be specific to 'Dodo' -

i/ Whether the sponsons had a vision slit above the blanked off machine gun flap.

ii/ Whether the driver's cab had a large square roof hatch.

David F says he & a friend have worked out a theoretical stowage layout that would mean that the cab had to have a roof hatch as rearward access was impossible [even to the round hull roof hatch].

However, all photos of Dodo, and artwork based on photos from the Osprey MkI book seem to show a cab roof that's as smooth as a baby's bum on top!, as well as sponsons without vision slits...

Let's face it, the roof hatch on the Bovington MkII Supply sticks out a mile, so you'd see it even on a very rough photo.

Does anyone have good side, front, or front 3/4 shots of Dodo [or failing that another MkI Supply] that confirm or deny the sponson slits and roof hatch theories?

I've also noticed that some MkI's are fitted with 'splash' plates below the driver's & commander's front hatches. They are angled as if to deflect shrapnel and bullet splash away from open hatches. Were these common? and Did any Supply tanks have them? They are quite a cool feature.

If you check this photo, you'll find that the roof hatch and the vision slit in the sponson are visible. As an added bonus, the photo is of Dodo.
The only supply tank I know of that had the splash guards fitted is on a Mk II.
BTW, I wouldn't rely too heavily on the artwork. There have been mistakes made before (For glaring examples, check Osprey's "German Panzers 1914 - 18").

Brilliant shot Mark. Thanks biggrin

Getting all my questions answered in one go... nice!

I think that's the shot that the Osprey colour plate is based on, so they have taken a liberty [or should that be a 'MkVIII'] with the roof hatch! German Tanks 1914-18 does have some dreadful 'Tauro style' errors too - the whole of the Ubw undercarriage for a start... should have hardly any clearance but there is just 'white' between the running gear.

Now all I need is a photo of the roof hatch that shows the hinges. The angled Bovvie shots in the tank section of Landships seem to show 2 rear strap hinges and a small bolt near the front edge for an internal locking lever.

Does anyone have such a shot? Please...

Rear view of same tank - note the box filling the gap between the rear sponsons and blocking any rear exit - a very costive tank

The box is half the reason I am building it in the first place! It completes the rhomboid 'statement', whereas Mks I-III look a bit 'cut off' to my eyes.

I've always been a fan of variants as opposed to straight gun tanks, but when I grew up modelling an era where the only vehicles that ever got featured were steel wheel Tiger Es, infra-red Panther Gs, Panzer IV Js and Sherman 76s that's no surprise... I never modelled any one of those, and always looked for a tweak or oddity to incorporate into those tanks I did build.

Hence why the MkI Supply really rather turns me on. and a straight MKIV or V male doesn't.

Not sure what you mean by this - the Mk II and III had the same external fuel tank at the rear as did the Mk IV and V

The Mk II and III didn't have the external fuel tank. That was only introduced in the Mk IV. If the Mk II did have the external fuel tank, it wouldn't have been able to carry the stores box.
