French Equipment Query

Now that they have had a look at the HäT Early French, Plastic Soldier Review say that they think the third ammunition pouch on the French webbing (the one that was worn in the small of the back) was being phased out by 1914.

I've got lots of pics and illustrations of French troops with this pouch in place. The trouble is that most of the pics are of reconstructions, so there could be a mistake. On the Airfix French it's visible on some and absent or obscured on others, whilst it's shown on all of the Revell French. Surprisingly, I can't find many contemporary photographs that show the area clearly, but in one or two it seems to be there.

I'm sure it remained in use right through the War, although the design of the pouch itself was modified more than once. Any offers?

Hi James, I was so impressed with the DVDs that Mario sent me on Albert kahn that I bought the BBC book, Chapter 4 deals with WW1 but only one picture which of course is posed shows french soldiers defending a trench, one man is holding a stick grenade, the backs of the four infanrtymen is visible from the side and they all have rear pouches... the pic is dated 9/8/15 at Le hamel (pg132), all wear typical horizon blue capote and kepis with very dark blue almost black trousers and putties, heavily worn black belts and pouches and brown boots....an officer stands in the background and has a medium dark blue jacket and kepi....

hope this helps
Cheers

Of course! Albert Kahn. I've googled around and found a couple of his that sort of fit the bill, but not the one you describe. Any chance of a scan?

Mirouze's book shows the pouch on the French right up to 1918, as well as on the French kit supplied to the Russian Brigade and the Colored U.S. troops, but you never know. Mollo and Turner show it in drawings of both early and late French issue, but only contemporary pics will clinch it. I'd love a copy of your pic. One good scan deserves another (see Caesar post).
