My 1/35 Rolls-Royce Armored Car scratchbuilding project.

From the September 1989 Fine Scale Modeler article. This is my first time building from drawings. I'm glad it doesn't have many compound curves!

Last week:

Tonight (I don't get to work on it every night)

The only part I'm dreading is the tires. I'm kinda wishing I had done it in 1/24 like the article so I could use the Heller Bentley tires.

Hello Lee,that are  my solution for the wheels, in order of similaty to the original fashion of them,

* use the  pneumatic tire of the limber  which came in the 37 mm ICM russian antitank gun kit, (remove the "wire" molded on spokes, replace them with  plastic disks for the central  part of the wheel)
- I refeer to the one of the two versions of the kit  in the market, with the limber parts sprue moulded in white plastic.-check out for that!

*take advantage on the 2 cm Tamiya flak wheels, in this case You wil need to add some additional strip to the diameter, to reach the appropiated size in scale, but the inner detail is decent and suitable for being updated,

* Try the central tube of the tamiya masking tape magazine, (the part molded in grey) carefully sawed and again with the addition of plastic disks!
Good luck and happy modelling!

Thank you Eduardo. I will look for those kits. I have a Sherline lathe, but trying to make tires...it would take forever.

I edited my post to show the correct second photo.

Eduardo-
I can't find an ICM 37mm Russian gun. I did see a 45mm with spoke wheels. Is this the kit you're talking about?

I have some Tamiya masking tape. I have to try your trick.

Hello Lee,
I did, check my Icm  37 mm  kit  and the parts  are there and numbered 36-37 &37-38 in the sprue labelled "C", moulded in white-grey plastic, most ICM kits from this small antitank teams have sprues in common,,it is possible and likely even the recommended sprue is there inside the box of the 47 mm also, - but check aout for a review in Internet, or ask a friend, or may be the local hobby dealer can allow you to take o look.-
For cutting out the slices of the Tamiya magazine I first chose a  small saw, cut a slice a bit more broad than i need  sanded of the excess with medium grain sandpaper. You can glue inner or outer side a thin strip all around, previously  bent for making  it a "curly" strip easily adaptable to the ring You got.
Keep me informed, soldier! Good luck!
You are doing a beautiful job!smile

Eduardo-
Can you show me a photo of the box for the Russian 37mm gun? I can't find it anywhere. I can only find a 45mm and a 76mm. Do you have an extra kit?

Thank you, Lee

Hello Lee

You are doing an excellent job, I really look forward to seeing more of  your ambitious scratch build.

All the Best.
Tim R.

P.S. I have a jig I use for wire spoked wheels, and it can be adjusted to what ever size you need, if you are interested in trying it for your wheels, I will dig it up, and email the plans to you.

Hello LEE,Tim!!
Sorry for the delay (work commitements). Despite long searching, I could not pic up a photo in the Internet, bur I think  the 45 mm is likely to have the mentioned sprue & parts.
Unfortunately the model is no longer avaible in Argentina, and my sole remainig example is now a work in progress.
I still think the 2 other options are viable, both the tamiya cartrige and the FLAK wheel. But if you already have a lathe, I will suggest to try building  atube from a solid rod, and then cut it in slices... any slice, previosuly sanded in the edges, can be a decent representation of the tires!
Indeed it is a sad thing that such fine and interesting vehicule has not been yet represented in scale by any mayor kit maker!
Keep working soldier, You will succes!

Sad news I'm afraid,Lee. From what I've seen on various modelling sites Resicast had a resin 1/35 1914 pattern Rolls at EuroMilitaire and they will be releasing it sometime in October. Although it will not replace the joy of having scratchbuilt your own.
Paul
PS have you considered using epoxy putty for the tyres

That's not bad news at all. I have their site bookmarked, in fact. I have referred to it several times as reference material. I was inspired to build this when a fellow IPMS club member showed me his Jordi Rubio kit of a Rolls-Royce/Fordson armored car. I've seen that kit online for $103 US. I don't really have much money to spend on kits right now, but I have a lifetime of tools and materials that I can use for projects.

I did think about epoxy putty. I was thinking I could make a "screed" with teh side profile of the tire, then turn a blank of epoxy putty very slowly on the lathe and use the screed to shape the sidewall. That way I could get a tire that is symmetrical. I may give that atry over the next few days. I need to rearrange my model room first.

Looking good!  Nice to see another crazy scratchbuilder here.  Just a thought on tyres,  hae you looked into the 1/32 vintage car kits released by Pyro, and re-issued by Life-like, and Lindberg?  Some of those might be close enough.
