Transporting gun at Brasschaet, Belgium
Permalink

I came across this early postcard showing a heavy gun being transported to or from Brasschaet (Brasschaat) in Belgium. The postcard is dated 1913, but the steam engine is much earlier - c.1880. The people's dress suggests they are civilians rather than military - perhaps haulage contractors or scrapmen moving the gun? Can anyone shed any more light on what might be happening in the photo?

I suspect the postcard used an old photo from the archives of the camp at Brasschaat. This is now an artillery museum, but my attempts to contact them for more information about the photo have so far been unsuccessful. I was wondering if anyone could put me in touch with the right person to speak to regarding the Brasschaat archives?

Many thanks

David

Dear David,

Is the gun an ancient muzzle loader? If so, scrap does seem a likely fate.

John.

I think it could be, but I don't really know enough about this subject.

Best wishes

David

This gun was still present on Brasschaet Polygone late 1914.

The locomobile is most probably an Haulage contractors.

Artillery museum at Brasschaet has moved to new premises and is well worth a visit.
