Australian Armoured Cars

Whilst during some reading on this site Desert Column I came across this reference to Australian built armoured cars, apparantly these were improvised from donated chassis and armoured with plate intended for ammunition waggons, armed with Colt mgs(yet again) three seem to have been built no two alike....

more info here.

I have recently had a look at these two vehicles. The best I have found so far is that one was probably based on a Mercedes Simplex with a 60 hP engine (1903 --1909 models?) and the other on a British Daimler with a "Silent Knight" 50 HP? engine.

The unarmoured tender may have been a 1914 Minerva model JJ.

Hopefully those on the site with better knowledge of prewar civilian cars can correct me?

There are extra photos on the Australian War Memorial site. There numbers are : DAX2183, DAOD2303 to DAOD2306

In the same ten-year-old copy of Military Modelling that contained the 1/32 Holt model is this pic of an entry in Euro Militaire.

Caption reads "Mercedes, 1st Australian Armoured Car Section, Egypt 1916". That's all I know, but Mr. Richard Keane must have had some information on the subject.

That's a very nice model of "Silent Sue" the Mercedes based vehicle. The Daimler was called "Gentle Annie". Photos of the vehicles show them to be a dark colour, even in the desert, so they may not have been painted "Sand"

I am not so sure about the horizontal slit above the Colt MG. Pictures I have seen so far don't show that, just a row of rivets.

Any ideas on what wheels/chassis would be suitable in 1/72 for a scratch-build?
