In theory, with an overall length of 5 metres (16' 3") it would be capable, for reasons of geometry, of crossing a trench no wider than half its length as an absolute maximum. The Mks I-IV, at 26 feet, could only manage a 10 foot trench. It's all to do with the point of balance. The nominal trench-crossing ability of the FT was 1.8 metres (6 feet) with the tail fitted, and about 1.5 metres without.
The idea of the FT was that it should not be used to cross trenches but be able to cross shelled ground by going into and out of craters. In this respect it produced mixed results, and was far more useful on only moderately broken ground.
