confuse My principle interest is in the eastern theatres in WWI - Balkans, Turkey, Galicia, Caucassus etc. I have been digging on the Turks & found on line - "Ottoman Army Effectiveness in World War I - Edward J Erickson" - very useful if brief.

Ottoman Army Effectiveness in World War I - Edward J Erickson has a good section on the Turkish Armies changes to its Divisional structure. After the Balkan Wars the Rifle Battalions (& the Corps Rifle Regiment) were abolished as they had not been used appropriately. Apparently the specialist Rifle units were supposed to be for close recconisance but were often used an elite assault troops. The divisions did receive / constitute a Divisional Assault Battalion. Unfortunately he gives no information on its organisation, equipment etc. The other noted change is the practice of attaching the district Gendarme Battalion when operation in Ottoman Territory (indicates that this was to provide local knowledge etc).

There are very limited other references to the Divisional Assault Battalion outside Erickson's major work "Ordered to Die - A history of the Ottoman Army" which is rather beyond my budget at present as I would cost almost $300NZ for me to obtain.

Don't know how it works in NZ, but I obtained a copy of Ordered to Die through the Library Lending Service here in the UK. My local library ordered it from another branch and it arrived a couple of weeks later. The charge was £1 or £1.50.

There's a contributor to the HäT Forum called Head for the Guns Hank who will, I'm sure, be happy to provide an objective opinion . . .

Thanks for the suggestion, the unfortunate reality is that Library Personel in NZ are going through another bout of the mailse "Anything about the military EXCEPT that which covers fighting as thats immoral". confuse

This is a disease they get periodically & has caused some great social & sociological studies to be purchased but placed under Military Science where bext to no one will find them. The usual signal is when a library's back editions of Janes end up in the anbnual discarded book sale & new editions are not bought!no

Will put my post on the Hat Forum & see how HFTG Hank responds - I had forgotten about him in all his colour.

Can I suggest that you try the strelets forum in your search for the one-and-only hank. He seems to haunt that place.

And for rare books try 'abebooks' online, if you want to purchase. Project Gutenberg has a lot of out of copyright books online, as does 'the internet archive'. Haven't searched there, as I have a large ginger cat sat on one of my arms!
