Back end of the mkIV
Permalink

Thanks PDA for your advice on the HaT that this forum is better for my question. Orginally I did try to register but the gremlins on my computer would not let me - I have now suceeded in registering!

I would like to improve my Emhar mkIVs. I understand that the fuel tank needs armour plating. Is there anyone out there can suggest how to improve the back end of this rather crude model or has pictures that could help. (use a sledgehammmer has already been suggested!). Thanks to those who replied on the HaT site.

I notice already that you have comments on the mkII back end. I e-mailed Airfix the other week asking about the female MkI/II's release date. They indicated that it was in March. It may be a good month with the re-release of Revell's German WW1 troops.

Hello RCD. Welcome.

This photo shows the back end of 'Lodestar III', the best preserved Mark IV:

It is on this page:
http://www.landships.freeservers.com/mk4_survivors.htm

Further down the page is a photo of the back end of 'Grit':

And elsewhere on the web there are pictures of the rear end of 'Deborah':

These are the surviving Mark IVs that still have both pieces of the rear armour.

Both plates are slightly sloped, but the top one does not obstruct the fuel tank flap (don't follow Emhar's instructions to put the fuel tank on sideways! The flap goes on top, hinges toward the tank).

In this thread, Hans explains how he made the large rivets in the plates:

He gently twisted a knife on the back of the plasticard plate.

But you could try Archers decals.

HTH

Thanks for the information PDA. Really liked Hans's site - some rarely sweet work there. Hans your clear pictures, especially the ones showing how you corrected the back, solve my problem.

Thank you both

Was the rear armour on the Mk IV's factory fitted, or a field mod like the unditching rails? Going to do a quick simple Mk IV Female as my local 'Presentation Tank'

I think the consensus of opinion on this site was that it was probably factory fitted.

IIRC this conclusion was reached after discussion of the case of 4643 Grit in Australia. The argument goes; Grit never went to the front, but instead went straight from England to Australia. Nevertheless, she sports the rear armour.

Seems logical to me. But my memory is quite fallible!
