I know, but the gun come in service before WW1 and stil use it during WW1 and WW2 (like the Battle of Tarawa). wink
I think its the Type 38. But FHSW tell me the Type 41 and its the same gun. Im not sure is this the Type 38 or Type 41. The Japanese calendar declared the number 41. Taish was no emperor for 41 years and Hirohito was also not 41 years emperor when Ww2 broke out. The only period was the Meiji period before WW1. The Type 38 most be used from 1905 - ???When the Type 41 was also developed, then the gun was used from 1907.

I think you are mixing up the different Japanese calendar systems.

Type 38 and 41 would seem to refer to the Meiji era which ended in 1912 with Meiji 45 so the Type 38 and 41 guns are 1903 and 1908 common era (CE). This system is based on the reign of the emperors. The successor to the Meiji era was the Taisho era (1912-26) then the Showa era (1926-1989).

The more familiar Imperial Japanese calendar system refers to the year with reference to the start of the reign of Emperor Jimmu in 650 BCE. So Type 1 (2601) in the Imperial system is 1941 CE.

Charlie

..... I'm not certain what 203mm means,  for the Japanese Type 38 is a 75mm Field Gun;  essentially the Krupp M1905 built under licence.    There are easily distinguished form other Krupp shelf models by the 16 spoke wheels.
The Type 41 was the cavalry version of the same gun lightened by deleting the gunner's axle seats.

I have found the gun as 8-Inch. British guns (in service from 1903) used by Japanese guns (service 1905). Built by Armstrong-Whitworth, Vickers, Son and Maxims. Two types of turrets are built. When? I don't know. The Type 1 Sapuk and Type 2 Sapuk. On the next pictures you see an Type 38 (this is an Type 38!!!) with the Type 2 Sapuk turret on Tarawa. I have found in the past details of the gun with 3 and 8 in Japanese.

The Tarawa guns were part of a shipment of 12  8" guns supplied by Vickers in 1905. There has been a myth around that the Tarawa guns were captured in Singapore but:

"In 1977, however, British writer William H. Bartsch published the results of a recent visit to Tarawa in the quarterly magazine After the Battle. Bartsch personally examined each of the four guns and discovered markings indicating manufacture by Vickers, the British ordnance company. The Vickers company subsequently provided Bartsch records indicating the four guns were part of a consignment of 12 eight-inch, quick-firing guns which were sold in 1905 to the Japanese during their war with Russia."

www.nps.gov/archive/wapa/indepth/extContent/usmc/pcn-190-003120-00/sec4.htm#singapore

I guess that the "Type 38" designation refers to the year of official acceptance of the guns without indicating anything about their origin.

A bit of digging suggests that the 8" guns were supplied to the Japanese in both L/40 and L/45 sizes. The Royal Navy had abandoned 8" guns in favour of 9.2" guns in 1885 but the 8" gun was further developed for export by Elswick Ordnance. (Wikipedia)

Charlie

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_8_inch_Mk_I_-_VII_naval_gun - in the "History" section.

There's a bit more data on the EOC pattern guns  at www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNJAP_8-45_EOC.htm

Mentioned in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_8_inch_Mk_VII_naval_gun

In the interim Elswick Ordnance continued to develop 8-inch guns in 40 calibre and 45-calibre lengths for export, mainly to Japan.

[Edit] Oops, already answered and more - sorry CharlieC ashamed.gif. But I did provide the clickable link
