Main Landships Page Disabled?

went to look at some stuff on the Landships main site & got a Site Disabled message? Is there a problem the community can help with?

Have sent Peter two messages and am waiting for reply, if you check the bottom of the forum main page there is a note there on funding although its definatly not up to date, you can donate by paypal if you wish I did so late last year and it seems to work.....
However peter doesnt seem to have posted since last september and Im wondering if hes OK, has anyone had a contact recently?

I think the donation facility at the bottom of this forum's main page is just for this forum; not for the main site.

I haven't heard from Peter since about September either. At that time he said he was extremely busy, and away from home, with work. Hopefully that is all it is, and hopefully he is in fine health.

I think so too. If donations are insufficient we get sponsoring advertisements, not disablement of the forum. It will vary but I see the "big belly" ones most frequently on other sites where this applies already. Maybe they know me :)

It is possible his registered e-mail address there (on freeservers account detail) has simply "bounced" on a routine contact, that would be sufficient to commence the abandonment process for the site. I have had no response to the message I sent a few days ago, but it has not (yet) "bounced" - sometimes they take 5 days to bounce in accordance with rfc-suggested interval but usually less these days, depending on the last server to attempt delivery.

My point is a minor thing like a lapsed e-mail address can snowball in its effects, un-noticed - and hopefully the explanation is something along these lines.

I checked back, and last time I heard from Peter was August 09, not September.

I have sent a couple of emails to two different email addresses I have for him (they took a while to find!) expressing everybody's concern for him, and our offers of help.

I am getting worried the thought of losing all that information is difficult to imagine.
Peter has spent years building the archive up. It is to be hoped that he is OK. It is sometime last year I had contact via the email address on the "whats new" page.
Lets hope everything will be OK and obviously the main thing is that Peter is OK

I am not a moderator, but I would suggest your instinct is quite right; don't put it on the forum, not even in a PM.

Instead, can you send him a snail mail? If, heaven forfend, something has happened to him, a relative will receive the snail mail, whereas they won't be able to read any of his emails.

I suspect Rectalgia is right; his old email got spammed to oblivion, so he changed it, but didn't update it at freeservers, and it got discovered in a routine check up by them. And perhaps his job has called him in to a country/place with no internet service.

Naturally we all hope his health is A-OK. However, as a precaution, anyone who knows how to drive the 'way-back-when-time-machine-archive-internet-thingy' might do us all a favour by saving as much of the old site as they can, in case we have to re-launch.

That is http://www.archive.org/ and, as a starting point, one simply feeds in www.landships.freeservers.com/ following the pre-entered "http://" in the "take me back" box to be presented with a selection of archived versions of the website (the latest being several years old when I looked). Hopefully it isn't an urgent need to take back-ups - the archive is intended as a secure, long-term on-line repository though limited (material held there is not presently "searchable", some "graphics" may be skipped from some - or possibly all - archived versions). But it has to be said the archive seems to be struggling a bit. Sometimes (like as I write this) the response is

We're sorry. We were unable to retrieve the requested data. We may be experiencing technical difficulties and suggest that you try again later."

And the "mission" was to keep just 6 months behind current - they're falling behind, it seems (they have some 55,000,000,000 pages stored already).

And stuff does get removed (always the owner's prerogative). Also (from their FAQ) "Our terms of use specify that users of the Wayback Machine are not to copy data from the collection. If there are special circumstances that you think the Archive should consider, please contact info at archive dot org."

Well, I think content established as a co-operative effort would warrant their consideration. Anyone with some server capacity and feeling a little nervous might like to make that approach. Of course what individuals do on their own machines for their own use ... (I'm thinking there's no copyright issues with the content).

Spent some time on the wayback machine today looking at the Landships pages. Its amazing how much content was posted. No matter what happens - I hope Peter is ok and I wish I could thank him and all the others who put together the articles on the site. I have learned so much about WWI AFVs on this site and DG.

It would be sad to lose both the Terry Ashley's Perth Military Modeling site and Landships in the same month...

I tried the Wayback machine and I got on the site but you are right it doesn't show
all the pictures. It is still better then nothing . I hope all is well with Peter. He has done a great job building this site. I really hate to see it end especially since I too just started getting interested in the Great War.
