I've started on Landships 2 - the start page with empty links is at:
www.ammsbrisbane.com/landships/index.html
I've tried to keep the general look of the Landships site. Post any comments. suggestions in this forum. I'll prototype some of the other pages over the next few days.
Would someone like to design a "favicon.ico" for the new site?
Regards,
Charlie

Hi CharlieC, good start, I would offer my help unfortunatly I have no technical knowledge of site building but I do have some time and am willing to learn.. let me know if you think theres any way I can help.... Favicon Icon... a side view of a Rhomboid might be an idea or possible the front? 16x16 pixels is tiny though....

Like most Web things these days generating favicons is automated - www.genfavicon.com - there are other online sites as well. I've found it takes a bit of fiddling around to find the right start image to give a good favicon.
The "Tanks" link is active. On the tanks page the menu opens ok - there are texts for the Romfell and Burstyn vehicles. The Highslide library is installed and presents the full sized images (where present) just fine (on Firefox anyway)
I think the disclaimer page should be changed to "About" with some added text about requiring attribution if material is used elsewhere.
Still a bit of tidying to do to get everything to dock together properly but the main ideas are there.
For people in Europe the pages might be a bit slow to load because they are hosted on the outskirts of the Internet in Australia.

Charlie

Hi Charlie I find the page speed is fine at least as fast as the forum in any case, Im based in Germany I use internet explorer 7 my internet Connection is barely DSL though still about x10 speed on a ordinary modem.....
maybe this is a usefull link for creating a personalised favicon for those who dont have other software... gives access to editors etc...
Does anyone have a copy of the wallpaper download of St Chamond tanks from the original Landships site - it's missing? Please PM me if you have it (just to keep e-mail addresses off the forum).
A policy question - should we split some the kit reviews that are used as articles into an article and a kit review? Originally I think Peter was using the "real thing" section of the review as an article because he didn't have too many articles when the site started.
Conversion of the articles is fairly simple but tedious - it mostly is just cut and pasting the text from the original html file into a template, tidying up the language and reformatting the image links. I think we're going to need volunteers for this.
Anyone want to have a go at writing the text for the home page? Sounds simple but it takes time to get the text both informative and tight.
How much further should I go with the prototype? My thought is to put in the rest of the home page links and perhaps some of the single pages. It never was my intent to build the whole of Landships 2 as a prototype.
Regards,
Charlie

Yeah, got it Charlie - it's actually there but in the /downloads/ subdir (same as the others), rather than as linked but if you put the correct link in the browser window you get some security message saying you're not permitted to do that there 'ere. I hacked around that with Firefox-Firebug (and you can do the same if you have Ff with that add-on - just edit HTML to insert the missing subdir) - but I've downloaded it anyway, sending PM next.
Landships 2 needs to incorporate the best design practices, but it still needs to give the WW1 vibe. It's a hard thing to explain, but I think Peter did a good job of capturing that feeling with the original Landships by his choice of colors and period artwork for things like the banner. You can always play with colors, fonts or structure, but please keep the art. No worries, your moving in the right direction. The really important thing is that we now have something to move the content to in 5 months if Peter can't be found.
I kept Peter's original colour scheme for exactly that reason - even though the colour choice is a bit questionable on accessibility grounds - doesn't work well for colour blind people.
The site uses the html-strict standard - a bit painful to write but should render ok in all modern browsers. I haven't gone down the track of loading the site into a CMS (content management system) but it does separate content and display reasonably well using stylesheets. The site also uses AJAX heavily to load content. My objective is to have about 10-15 html pages with many pieces of content loaded dynamically.
So - have you got some spare time to convert some of the original pages?
Landships 2 is looking good so far - well done sir ! May I make a suggestion on the title ? I think it would be more in keeping if it was Landships II as opposed to 2. Apart from that I'll keep my nose out of things as its a bit deep for me Paul

Well spotted, nice touch.
Or should it be MarkII, now I'm getting frivolous.

Hi All, Just a quick one, I've just tryed the web address given by Charlie for the new site, but all it want,s to do is send me back to the forum, what am i doing wrong?, any help please!!
Yes, I can give a few hours this week to convert some pages, but you will have to help on the first one. I am not afraid of HTML and dev tools, but its been a while.
PDA has organised a new graphic for the banner of Landships 2 - I've changed out the old graphic so it should appear on the test version - www.ammsbrisbane.com/landships/index.html. If it doesn't appear on your browser try <shift>refresh or clear the local browser cache.
I concur. T-shirts - anyone who has not done it before, if you have an ink-jet printer you can get transfer paper to do the job. Just don't forget to reverse the image (and lighten it - though most printers will have an 'iron-on transfer' paper setting to do that for you). Microsoft Office Picture Manager is just one of the tools that can do those jobs.
Landships 2 is looking good; there are a handful of articles on there so far. More appear each day; thanks to Charlie's hard work. Well done that man.
It has crossed my mind to get some t-shirts printed up by a proper t-shirt printing place, and sell them to make some money to support the Landships sites (1, 2 and the forum). Or perhaps they are something that the sponsors can sell to make up the money they will spend supporting the Landships sites? Just a half-formed idea at the moment.

Bit more progress - the download page has been converted - some more articles have been converted (thanks PDA).
I'm trying to do some forward planning....
Remaining items on the top menu:
Links (will need to check these some are dead) Forum link
Side menu (with images)
Plans - consolidate the existing plans, links and Ken Musgraves plans into a single page (need to check the links some of these are dead) Kit Reviews - Split the historical/factual part into the articles area, retain the review parts. Model Articles Model Galleries Kit lists (Kit News) - I'm not sure about this one - strikes me that it's a maintenance issue, especially since the forum seems to handle kit announcements. Reference - Book list and other stuff
Feedback, suggestions welcome.
What progress on finding a permanent home for Landships II?
Regards,
Charlie

Charlie, will sort that out right after the weekend. We've had Queen's Day here today, when all the Dutch are dressed in orange and have a big party. I'm in touch with W^D Models, who are also interested in sponsoring Landships II and will meet Retrokit this Sunday at a model show in Belgium.
Will the site look exactly the same as this? I hope so , because I really like this layout, and it feels much more comfortable and organized than other forums, which are very big and crowded - Impossible to move around.
The new domain, landships.info, has been registered. All the access info will be available shortly. Charlie, I'll be needing your e-mail address to pass the ftp info in due time. The sponsors of the new site are indeed W^D Models, Retrokit and Black Lion Decals. I'll pass the sponsoring banners to Charlie, as soon as I have them.
I hope to have more free hours next week, but this weekend I am out of town. Its Mother's day in the States and I am going to spend a little time back home in Dublin, Georgia. Before I leave I should have the html done for new version of the Exploits of "Musical Box".
I really like the clean format of Landships II.
Regards,
Chris.
