No wonder this got past the censor! One of many artistic impressions of what the Tanks looked like before the official photos were released - obviously based on the Holt Tractor. Love the pincers at the front

I've been wondering about these particular artistic impressions. They are, as you say, obviously based on the Holt G9:

But as we now know, the Holt G9 was a fake, wooden tank that never left America:

So how did the artist, presumably on the western front, get inspired by a movie prop that never left America?

Well, I guess we know now whence came the inspiration for the movie prop. Certainly the G9 was one very awesome-looking contrivance and perhaps the details of real tanks were still considered secret when "Patria" (produced 1916, released 14 January 1917) was being planned, which I suppose was also 1916.  Hearst needed to be very careful - he was walking a fine line and was "Senate-investigated" on suspicion of producing Central-powers propaganda (anti-Japanese) as it was.  He couldn't risk any hint of revealing "military secrets" even if, by then, they weren't.

sounds like a nice idea Elbavaro!
This picture is not a land battle ship, but I think it must have made some impression on friend and foe.
