I've been wondering about these particular artistic impressions. They are, as you say, obviously based on the Holt G9:

So how did the artist, presumably on the western front, get inspired by a movie prop that never left America?

Well, I guess we know now whence came the inspiration for the movie prop. Certainly the G9 was one very awesome-looking contrivance and perhaps the details of real tanks were still considered secret when "Patria" (produced 1916, released 14 January 1917) was being planned, which I suppose was also 1916.� Hearst needed to be very careful - he was walking a fine line and was "Senate-investigated" on suspicion of producing Central-powers propaganda (anti-Japanese) as it was.� He couldn't risk any hint of revealing "military secrets" even if, by then, they weren't.
