German naval guns for army use in August 1914
Permalink

Just reading jager's book and other sources its clear that many heavy artillery like the 13cm, 15cm and 17cm naval guns were used by germans to compensate for long-range artillery

but none of these sources [ which are all in english for me sadly] give any numbers e.g how many guns were by 1914 or end of 1914 in such use ?
so its hard to tell if they really made a difference
does anybody have more information on this

question #2

germans had a model 1904 100mm long range gun how many were operational by 1914 ? Jaeger says 32 ONLY !

and he mentions also a 130mm long range gun does anyone have more information on how much of these were avalible

thank you

Hello,

The 17-cm naval gun was for the first time in land service in june 1917 only.
The 15-cm naval gun was in land service in 1915 only.
In August 1914, 32 13-cm gun Army guns were in service and 344 10-cm Kanone und 04.

A small point: in August 1914, some "export guns" were given to Naval Divisions in Flanders:
-2 13,5-cm Belagerungskanone L/35 älterer Konstruktion für Marine.
-3 15-cm Belagerungskanone L/30 (Spanien) für Marine.
I have photographs of these two guns models with naval crew in 1914 and 1915 years.

I have published in french Review "Tank Zone" N° 12 august 2010 an article on 17-cm SKL/40 naval gun with 25 photographs mostly never published (with some in Flanders with naval crew).
Yours sincerely,
Guy François.

I don't have access to Jaeger's book so would someone indicate how many 15cm and 17cm Naval guns were deployed on the Western front in WW1. There is a surviving 15cm iRL gun at North Head Artillery Museum in Sydney - they have been researching this gun and were after some background data on this type of gun.

Regards,

Charlie
