Gaza tanks - colour and camouflage
Permalink

Therer has always been some debate as to what colour the gaza tanks were painted.
I wish I could say that they were oainted monochrome "desert camouflage", but from the photos, they look like darker shades with a pattern of sorts, yet not like the Solomon designation.
Any ideas to solve this mystery???
Hugh.

Hi Hugh, I hoped you had a merry Christmas. I have read some of the threads on this subject and from them and the books I have read, it seems that the tanks were painted the same dark khaki as the ones on the Western Front. As to the splotches, some tanks had paint applied and sand thrown on them to give it a camouflage effect. I have also read that oil may have been used too under the sand. Another possibilty is that you seeing the effect of sand clinging to the sides of the tank simply from driving through the dusty and arid region of Palistine. I have a photo of an M2 Bradly here in the U.S. that had been running around in the American southwest desert and the coating of sand on the IFV is so fine that it looks like paint!. In fact I looked at the photo several times before I realised it was sand and not paint.I hope this helps and maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in.
