1916 Tank crew uniforms.

Hello Everyone, can anybody help me find some photos, illustrations etc of the first tank crews uniforms worn at Flers. Am working on a new painting and would like to put  some tank crew in. Its good old C company again in what may be Chimpanzee Valley but I read ,opinions differ on the subject. Any thoughts? smile

Thanks again,
  Mick.

Overalls (dark blue, as used by RFC - the tan coloured ones didn't come in until late 16/early 17, not sure of exact dates), often seen with the usual jacket on top - tanker's chain mail mask and helmet. Received my Tanker's facemask yesterday if photos are of use.

If not tanker's leather helmet, caps are often also seen, the normal Brodie helmet later on. If you're looking for a 1917 onwards Tank crew, I could lay out my kit on the floor but I don't have either my tanker's helmet or Brodie helmet at my flat so it would be boots, overalls, jacket and mask

Thanks for the help  I havn't seen that picture before. All the early tank crew in the Ancre film seem to be wearing cavalry type boots and leather helmets and pistol holsters.
Rob , would like to see your tankers uniform and helmet and mask, would like one of those myself bet the mask would look great framed with some piccies  ect .

I don;t wish to contradict but I am unsure about the overalls on 15th September. All the pictures from the battle of the Ancrew show the crews in service dress. Those in the MMGS sometimes were wearing the leather gaiters and some were wearing "Materity" tunics.

There is only one photo with someone who might be wearing overalls and that is a crewing leading C6 down the Albert road.

Stephen, i'd be very interested in seeing MMGS men in maternity tunics - they were only RFC

Rob - you are right

There were two pictures which I thought had RAF style tunics - I have had a great look and you are right.

But the two crewmen concerned (both in pictures of C Coy tanks are wearing a very interesting jacket

Have a look at the "tankee" leading C19 - the jacket is not a normal SD tunic
