Tanks in the Middle East 1916-1918
Permalink

Hi,
Im currently studying for a military history degree and i need to appeal to your expansive knowledge. I have decided to explore the role and contributions of the tanks sent to the Middle East between 1916 and 1918 for my dissertation. I understand that there may not be the same level of literature on this theatre than on the Western Front but any information you can give me would be of enormous help. I am particularly interested in any books or works, units or individuals involved, records, accounts or diaries that may concern the period. And if possible if anyone has done any research into this then any tips or sources (i.e archives or where i can get information) then i would be most grateful. Any information whatsoever will be most welcome, please reply here or email me at tanks1916-1918@hotmail.co.uk,
thank you in advance
Dan Sherwen

A good place to start, as you've realised, is this forum. Try a search for Gaza.

A couple of books you could look up:

Tank Mark I by David Fletcher, 2004, published by Osprey (25% off in February):

And, Tanks in The Great War, 1914-1918, JFC Fuller, 1920, available to read online or download (free) here:

It was generally felt that the tanks had very little effect, and were given far too many tasks to perform. But, you can be the judge of that!

There is a list of "tank books" here:

My personal favourites are the old ones, and quite a few of them are available free online.

B.H. Liddell-Hart, in "The Tanks, The History of the RTR" Vol. 1, has a useful summary of the units operations. Also, see Ernest Swinton's comments in his book "Eyewitness". The epic action of HMLS Nutty at the Tank Redoubt during 2nd Gaza is well described in the Australian Official History (which is available on-line from the AWM). Maj. O.A. Forsyth-Major, who was the 2ic of the EEF tank detachment, apparently wrote an "Official Report on Operations". I haven't been able to track down a copy, but your search mojo at the National Archives website may exceed mine.
