The purists may shout but I put Airfix male sponsons onto an Emhar IV. The sponsons fit exactly which I was very suprised about. The exaust and the box at the back were simple enough and were based on the Matador leaflet.
Considering trying the same with the female sponsons if I can get a Emhar model. I think that will be the biggest challenge as I am not into e-bay!
It's the front of the cab that will be the biggest problem, as far as I can see. The vision slits moved, and the mounting for the machine gun changed (quite a bit).
I was wondering, these drawings of the MkI in the article you referred too, are they correct? As for the male, the sponson top drawing, isn't there one angle or panel too much? (I mean the serie showing sides, top, with the aerial etc.) Oh and the angled iron is missing too on the top of the sponson)

Somehow, I overlooked them when I was re-writing the Mark I article.
Long Tom, I think track width remained the same until the Mark V and V* were introduced. Even then, not every tank used the new, wider, tracks. But, I know what you mean about too many changes between a Mark I and Mark IV.
I'm going to take a guess: You have Airfix's Mark I female, and it comes with spare male sponsons. You also have Emhar's Mark IV male, and know the sponsons are wrong. Am I close?
