Tank in Bridgend, S. Wales, 1922-ish.

Have just been talking to a lady aged 97 who is still as bright as a button. Without any prompting, she suddenly announced that she remembers watching a Tank being cheered through the streets of Bridgend. She was 7 or 8 at the time, which makes it 1922 or so.

Gwyn mentions a visit by to Bridgend by Egbert here

I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have more details? Did a photo ever turn up?

OK  what about Bangor,North Wales,apparentley there was a tank on a plinth outside the Town Hall. Any ideas Gwyn ????

There was certainly a presentation tank at Bangor.  Presented January 1920 and removed October 1937.  No mention of a tank at Bridgend on the Silver Bullit list though

Hi, Alwyn. Acc to the old lady, it wasn't a Presentation Tank but a parade through the town. I'm hoping Gwyn has got some info.

Of passing interest: her family were Russian Jews who fled to the UK to get away from the pogroms. Her father was given the option of joining either the Russian or British army. Since Jews were being mudered in Russia, with the government not taking any great steps to intervene, he was not anxious to defend the Tsar and opted for the British Army.

Egbert certainly had a visit to Bridgend in June 1918.  I doubt there would have been any "Tank Week" tanks visit in 1922.  By then the National War Savings Committees had wound down and all the presentation tanks had been presented so if it was a "Tank Week" tank it would have been in 1917 or 1918.  Can't think why a tank would have visited in 1922.

That makes perfect sense, Alwyn. Either the old lady can't recall precisely what happened 93 years ago, or I can't remember things from 48 hours ago. Either is possible. I'll check next time I speak to her. She might have said she was 4 or 5 at the time. Nice to be able to give her a bit of detail, though. I thank you.

No presentation tank in Bridgend. Egbert did visit. There are photos extant, but can't post due to computer problems at home. Sorry. Still using library computers.

Thank you, Gwyn. The pub is still there but is now, of course, a Wetherspoon's.

The citizenry in the photo might also be useful to Long Tom in his search for a Presentation Tank crowd scene. All we need now is a manufacturer of 1/72 umbrellas.

The location is indeed still recognisable today. I'm in Bridgend at least once a month and when in Dunraven Place my mind often turns to Egbert!
