More Holt Artillery Tractor Footage.

Been having a trawl round CriticalPast.com

Caterpillar tractors pull railroad flatcars loaded with 42-cm guns.

Not railway cars at all; look like captured German guns on their carriages. Clearly in France, but not clear if before Armistice or clearing up afterwards

Nice shot of Holt machine in USA

British troops using small tractors of some kind.  Can't identify tractors. Steam or internal combustion? One seems to be a tricycle arrangement.

Not to mention I 54 towing a 6" gun.

Great stuff James, thanks. Ah, if only some of the old-timers could have seen these, they would have been rapt.

Wow, those tractors are unusual, especially the tricycle arranged one at the rear. Great footage of Intimidator too

I think that might be a bullseye, K.

Hi James  the first two are the 1917 Titan 10-20 from IHC the last may be a Bull tractor the 1915 12/24 Big Bull... a Wallis Cub could also be a contender

http://www.steel-wheels.net/wallis.html

Probarbly dates the film to 1917..

looking at the video again I dont think its the Bull which has a smaller left hand rear wheel more likely the Wallis I Think..

Well done yet again, Ivor. I've been having a nosey, and I agree the Cub is favourite. Wider front wheel. The Bear was gigantic.

What would these small (compared to the Holt!) agricultural tractors have been used for? For agricultural use in Army service, or perhaps towing smaller artillery pieces?

After 20" and 30" (ish) there's just a glimpse of a small, spoked wheel behind each of the first two tractors. Can't be of any more help than that.

Getting hold of enough horses was a major problem, anything that seemed like it may replace them for the more mundain tasks such as transporting supplies was no dought tried out.. the tractors are very light and that might be a factor in towing guns they were also pretty cheap by the standards of the day.. one thing to be aware off is theres a lot of models with the same name, Mogul and Titan come in a whole range of sizes, the name is usually followed by the engine power and thats what counts..

This publicity blurb is from the previous model to the IHC Titan 10/20 and went for 675$ http://www.archive.org/details/mogul816hpoiltra00inte produced from 1914-1917 when the Titan took over...

The film at that point has the impression of a trial lots of brass... doughtless they all had a good laugh...

These small tractors were intended for small fields the narrow steering meant they could turn very tight using every square foot of ground...
