primitive trench mortars

Hi all:

Can anyone answer these questions: What was the colour of the german home-made trench mortars in the begining of the positional war? Were these primitive and makeshift weapons (mechanical projectors, the so-called "earth mortar" or the Genter Mortar) painted with a standard colour or were they non-painted and with metallic look?

Regards

Hello Jose

I have been researching mortars for awhile now; I have found that most of the early improvised models were built in the field for limited use, and they were not painted, but retained there natural appearance, metal, brass, wood, etc. Later models were painted in the standard German gray, or (feldgrau), others were painted flat black. Of course steel, brass, and other forms of metal would show through from the normal friction the mortar tube would make when firing (Mortar’s with a recoil system) others, was from daily handling.

I hope this helps.

All the Best

Tim R.
