Can anyone help with a little history of this gun?

Quite right - it's a 7.7cm Feldkanone 16, built by Krupp in 1918. I've seen the

other numbers on other FK 16s but I've never seen an explanation of these.

Canadian war trophies are documented - try this http://cefresearch.com/matrix/Utilities/War%20Trophies/. You can short circuit this by downloading - http://www.mediafire.com/?dntzmmln2nr. The

spreadsheet might be more convenient - http://www.mediafire.com/?45zdcmnliyy.

There doesn't seem to be any capture information for #12490 allocated to Trenton, ON. If it's the same as the Australian war trophies this usually means the gun came from the pool of surrendered guns.

Regards,

Charlie

The attached images are photos I've taken of the gun outside The Legion branch in Trenton, ON, Canada. Many of the Legion branches have such guns outside, so although I'd like to think they are trophy guns somehow connected with that branch, I have my doubts. Nobody in the branch knew anything about the gun (not even what type of gun it is); does anybody here know anything (other than it's a 77fk16 with part of the splinter shield missing)?

Is it possible to get a gun's history from its numbers (in this case "12490" is on the breech, along with "M6251" and "S9589"), eg, something about how and where it was captured, and by whom?

Is this a huge project? Or is there a record somewhere?

Thanks for that, Charlie. I didn't respond straight away because I have been exploring the documents you pointed me at. Very interesting, indeed.
