American Rifle Platoon?

I was reading about the organization of the american expeditionary forces and they have these crazy sections with 12 man for hand bomb section, 9 men for rifle grenadier section, 17 men for rifle section and 15 men for auto-rifle section.

Does anyone how they were used in practice?

Hi Morgoth I would suggest starting here:

http://www.archive.org/details/instructionsfort00washrich

many more manuals here:

Carl Trench Warfare

Also Trench Warfare (1917) by Major James Alfred Moss US Army, may be usefull, though not an official manual but lots of good info never the less. unfortunatly dont have a PDF link at the moment.

Thanks. The platoon manual is very interesting. It's from 1917, though and is about a platoon with 10 man squads that uses Lewis gun for automatic weapon. The numbers I have got are from 1918 and they use automatic rifles instead of Lewis gun.
The table of organization mentions that the automatic rifle section is composed of 4 automatic rifle teams (2 of which are usually used as ordinary riflemen) and bomber section is composed of 3 bomber squads.
