This is from the Mk V* section on chars français. It looks to me like Americans, with lots of FTs in the background, standing in front of a Mk something - IV? How could that have come about?

Hi James, another lovely pic you've found - t'anks!
I'm no expert, so this is a stab in the dark; my guess is that this is a postwar pic, possibly at APG, the tank (indeed MkIV female) is possibly already a museum piece, partially protected from the snow by a tarpaulin over the roof. The FTs may well be M1917s - we can't see enough to tell, although I notice there is a sort-of Tankodrome behind them on the right. I'm probably wrong in most of this, but I can make an educated guess about the FTs and say, based on what little detail we can see of the idler wheel of the nearest, that they are probably M1917s.
I suppose even if I was right it wouldn't really answer your question - what are they doing in a book about French tanks? Maybe it was a case of mistaken identity when the photo was chosen - more likely that I'm talking through a hole in my head!
Forgot to say - I agree they look American, and I think the tank's length may have made it seem longer than it is (like a V*). Sometimes you have to look closely at pics, they can be misleading; maybe that's what happened when this pic was selected for the book.
Now you mention it, the idler wheel bottom right does look steel rather than wood. This could be APG or Camp Meade. The number on the Tank keeps dancing before my eyes, but it could be 4631.

The tank is 4634, one of a number of Mark IV Females exported from Britain to the USA just at the end of the war. The photo is certainly taken in the USA but I can't be more precise than that.
Plenty of stuff on other Marks. Sorry if it's old hat. Who has compiled it?

Merci, Michel. I sent a message to Antoine. I think he is changing the site.
Amicalement.
