A Renault GP artillery tractor dismounting from a Pierce Arrow portee.

Fantastic photo by the way.

Well done, Tim. Thought there was a Renault-ish look to the engine-cover, but it's a new one on me. Some info from Renault here: http://www.planeterenault.com/15-histoire-renault/1605-renault-agriculture-rva/1123-historique/

I hope there was plenty of petrol in the tank, or it might have been difficult to restart the engine at that angle, given the likelihood of gravity feed being in use.

I didn't know Renault built a small tractor - the French Army seems to have chosen the Peugeot T3 as a tractor for the

75mm Mle 1897 as well as ordering 1200 Ford 3-ton tanks as artillery tractors.

Regards,

Charlie

The truck is an american built Pierce Arrow, but it has been converted to carry an artillery piece as can be seen by the hole in the back of the cab and the extension on the roof (making it a "portee"). Still in use at the start of WW2.

The Weald Foundation's new website (it must have been a trial site as it now says "coming soon") indicated they have recently acquired a complete Renault tractor and, for good or ill, robbed the mechanicals for one of their FTs.
