I am looking for information on the unit of the Connaught Rangers that was obliterated in 1916. What battle?

Location?

Any details are appreciated.

Any other clues? Bit vague. As for 'obliterated', Wiki gives the following;

In just over a weeks fighting in the Battle of the Somme (September 1916), the 6th Battalion lost 23 officers and 407 other ranks.

Which is about half a battalion, so although very heavy losses, not 'obliterated'

Dear Rob,

Thank you for your insight. My great grandfather was in a 'pals- brigade'

called the Connaught Rangers, He was KIA, no body was recovered. Is

there any way to look for tighter location of the unit on the front line?

Is there any known markers dedicated to the unit? He had left his

wedding ring at home, which has been handed down to me.

All the best,

-Martin

Connaught Rangers didn't have any 'Pals' battalions, there were no Pals brigades. If you have his service number (should be easy to find if he was killed in action as will be on the Commonwealth War Graves website), if you go on Ancestry his service record, as someone KIA, should be there, and when you find out what Battalion he was in, the war diary with the National Archives will tell you what they were doing on that date

Martin, you may already have seen this book but just in case you haven't here's the link: The Irish on the Somme

It's a free book, courtesy of The Project Gutenberg. The Connaught Rangers are in it quite a lot.
