Just thought i would post this as i have a massive interest in the Royal Artillery, particularly the regiments involvement in the First World War. My family has had a member serving in the Royal Artillery continuously since 1863 (which was my Great Great Grandfather). Here is a link to a page from my website which gives an insite into my Great Grandads role in WW1 as a Siege Battery commander http://www.freewebs.com/dswgreatwar/peterdanieldesbrow.htm
The only hole in my great grandads record is his time from Febuary 1916 to Jan 1918. It says in his records that he was posted back to the UK from France for "Special Work" with the Ministry Of Munitions, and in his records it has this "Special Work" listed as "Secret Work". I would love to know what it is he was getting up to.
I am having a bronze statue commissioned of my great grandfather and it will include the gun his battery (297th Siege Battery) used, the war diary and all ref's have it as a 6" Howitzer but doesnt say whether it was a 30 CWT or a 26 CWT?
Ta, That would be my thinking too. Does seem to be a lack of very decent clear photos online of them with original wooden spoked wheels, i need some good ones for my sculpture.
Worth checking of course but I wouldn't be surprised if the 6 inch ones were the same for both 26 cwt and 30 cwt, and also the 60 pounder - in which case there will be good photos of the earlier wheels on the 30 cwt at Woolwich and Duxford, and of the later types on the IWM 60 pounder
