Why have they painted Rupert Bear on the front?

I rest my case, m'lud...

Ah... Seriously (for once!), what actually is it? Is it a bear (in which case it's a weird bear) or some sort of sheep (which doesn't strike me as terribly warlike)?

Plenty of bears in Finland but of the brown variety (so Rupert is actually quite appropriate). Not cuddly though, one place in Finland where I was working bears were knocking people going to work off their bicycles and then hijacking their sandwichs out of their saddlebags. Mind you the boot is sometimes on the other foot as there is a restraunt in one of the towns up at the edge of the arctic circle that does a very tasty bear stew (and if you're tired of eating Rupert you can get a plate of Bambi and Thumper - not sentimental the Finns).
