FT/M1917 Query.

I'm absolutely certain I read somewhere that the driver's vision slits on the M1917 were two inches higher than on the FT, because the American troops tended to be taller than the average Frenchman. Have I dreamt this? If not, can anyone remind me where I read it?

Chin chin.

I haven't seen this before but comparing the two tanks - I think you're right the vision slits are higher in the 6-ton tank.

The shape of the side panels in the driver's position are different in the 6-ton compared to the FT.

The images are borrowed from the mesdiscussions forum - FT is the top image

Charlie

Sigh - you may be right - I'll have to pick through the images on Landships II and check whether the current assignments are correct.

Regards,

Charlie

Later - Worked through the images in the FT and 6-ton articles:

There is a 6-ton (image 3) in the FT article - the rest all seem to be FT or are not able to be determined.

The 6-ton article images all look ok - the images of the 6-ton at Fort Knox show a hybrid FT/6-ton which was created for the museum. I think

this tank is currently at AHEC, Carlisle, PA.

I'll fix up the articles and edit the article on the differences between the tanks - there are more items of difference than are currently noted.

I may yet prove to be writing in haste, but having had a quick look at photos of the two on Landships II - looking out for the tell-tale differences, as there still seems to be mixing up of the photos in the two articles - it looks to me as if the height varies from FT to FT; some seem to have the lower height slit shown in Charlie's pic above, whilst others seem to have it about halfway up, just like the M1917.

A detail difference between different factories?

I had seen this very recently myself.  If nowhere else, it's in the wikipedia article, under Distinguishing features, without citation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Ton_Tank_M1917

However, I doubt that anyone would dispute the difference in average height.

Side vision slots for the driver were added.

This book may reference the mod, although it's primarily a photo book.

French Light Tank Renault FT & U.S. Six-Ton Tank M1917 - Model Centrum Progres (publisher)

Refererencing Charlie's photos, it looks like the only constant between the two panels, the rivet on the right, roughly halfway vertically, could be used to confirm the height change.

A lot of tech info here, but no mention of the raised front vision slits:

While searching for confirmation of the Wiki statement, I found an interesting photo which provides a stark size comparison.
