Thanks Poilu - that is some amazing footage.  I've always associated pallets with WW2, and had no idea they were so prevalent in WW1.  Looks like lots of forced labor.

Excellent. There's not a lot of info on German mechanical transport, but there must have been plenty. I read somewhere that Germany only had something like 25% of the motor transport that the Allies had.

I must have a close look at those pallets again. I also thought that they were much later - I don't remember them until the 1970s. But now it occurs to me that in 1918 there weren't any fork-lift trucks.

I was surprised as well to see the pallets ... it however seems that the predate WWI. See:
