Question about the 6 inch Gun Mk VII

Hi all,

 

Does anyone know what the fittings circled in the picture below are for? Brakes perhaps?

(The above picture is taken from Ian Hogg's Allied Artillery of WW1 (1999))

There is also a picture on Wikipedia that shows some additional parts missing from the contemporary photo:

Any help would be appreciated!

It certainly seems to be a brake.

The manual for the 8 inch Mark VI (available here: www.forgottenweapons.com/lorem-ipsum/original-manuals/) has a very similar looking brake shown in Plate X.
