I recently got the Osprey book "U-Boats: 1914-1945" and noted that it depicted German naval uniforms as nearly identical throughout the era. I always wanted to depict the rebelling sailors of 1918, but deemed it just a pipe dream until I saw the book-and I have Dragon 1/35 figures of Dieppe naval infantry. I wondered if it were feasible to use those, with appropriate changes, to depict WW1-era sailors as well. I wanted to be sure because books sometimes contain errors.
You're right...I see that on the peacoats, the buttons were spaced further apart on the older model peacoats, among other changes.
Then I read up on the Freikorps. Seems that they retained their old military uniforms while most of the Communists did not, except maybe hats and a few coats. Fortunately Hornet makes the right heads with hats.
Apart from the buttons (I guess that WW2 peajackets had more button rows) and the unteroffizier shouldn't have epaulettes on the pea jacket and nobody wore the chest eagle patches!. The Dragon kit has WW2 helmets, a man with a sidecap (not used in WW1 Kriegsmarine) and a peaked cap of different design and insignia. The submachine gun, rifles and MG 42 must be replaced as well... I don't know exactly which were the colours of the WW1 naval uniforms... but in any case, it's an interesting conversion project! Maybe you can get a set of WW2 civilians or Resistance fightesr to act as Spartaquists!
