Translation of Cyrillic Markings
Permalink

This is outside the forum time frame but I'd like a translation of the markings on a Russian cannon captured during the Crimean War (1853-4) and

given the Colony of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). The cannon is located at the Anglesea Barracks, Hobart.

Regards,

Charlie

Thanks.

Is the Aleksandrovsky arsenal in St Petersburg?

The line "chief Butenev-1" is bit puzzling - could it be the official who accepted the gun?

Regards,

Charlie

According to РУКОВОДСТВО ДЛЯ АРТИЛЛЕРIЙСКОЙ СЛУЖБЫ (Manual to artillery service) from 1853 - 36 pounder gun corronades Russians had only in Navy. 36 pounder corronades were in fortress artillery and Navy. Russians had two diferent models: 36 pounder corronades and 36 pounder gun corronades. Caliber 36 pounder gun corronade was 173 mm and lenght gun barrel overall 254 cm.
