Ernest Swinton's Rank.

Not much to do with modelling,  but I've noticed that in most accounts Swinton goes from Colonel to General in 2 years or so. By the time he visits Holt in 1918 he's billed as a full General.  But I now read that he was only brevet (acting) colonel and was only made honorary Major-General in 1919. He doesn't mention his rank or promotions in his autobiography. Does anyone know the chain of events?

http://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/ could be useful. A summary of WW1 records available on the search "Ernest" and "Swinton" produces (with a rough guess at sequence) inter alia:

# First Name Surname Rank Record Year Unit
15E D Swinton Major 1914Royal Engineers
16E D Swinton Temporary Lieutenant Colonel 1914Special List
19E. D. Swinton Brevet Colonel 1914Royal Engineers
13E D Swinton Major 1915Royal Engineers
14E D Swinton Lieutenant Colonel 1915General Headquarters Staff
4Ernest Dunlop Swinton Lieutenant Colonel 1916Royal Engineers
3Ernest Dunlop Swinton Temporary Colonel 1916Royal Engineers
12E D Swinton Brevet Colonel 1916Royal Engineers
2Ernest Dunlop Swinton Lieutenant Colonel 1917Imperial Defence Cte A/Secy
18E. D. Swinton Lieutenant Colonel 1917Royal Engineers

There are links to the specific records - no doubt requiring membership.

That's a most useful source, Stephen. Ta. I shall explore it.

Found this, which pretty much ties in:
