M1917 / Six Ton Tank / FT17 Organization Questions
Permalink

How were American Army used FT17 type tanks organized?

Was their organization the same from their first issue until 1932 when they were declared obsolete and placed in storage?

I suspect they had a platoon of four tanks, four platoons in a company for 16 and then three or four companies to make a battalion, and some unknown number of radio tanks and replacement vehicles?

What other vehicles did they have, trucks, motorcycles, etc.?

Thanks.

ON PAPER, a U.S. Light Tank Bn in France in 1918 consisted of 3 companies, totaling seventy-two tanks and three signal tanks.

Each company had three platoons of five tanks and a an HQ section one signal tank and nine replacement tanks in reserve.

Mike:
Follow-up. I knew I had a typescript table of organization some where in my office...it took several days to realize where I had filed it.

Anyway, the undated document consists of several pages under the title, "TANK CORPS (Overseas)"

T-1 and T-202, Company, Light Branch has the typed initials, "S.D.R." [I presume, for Samuel D. Rockenbach]
For equipment for a company, it lists:
3 platoons of 5 tanks each

For what I expect is a HQ Company, it lists:
10 Tanks ("1 C.C., 1 Signal, 8 Reserve")
9 Trucks-5-ton with Trailers
1 Truck, 5-ton, L.C.
1 Trailer, Kitchen
1 Trailer, Water tank, 200 gal.
1 Automobile, -Ford
2 Motorcycles

T-201 Battalion Headquarters lists:
2 Tanks (1 Bn Cmdr., 1 Signal)
1 truck-5-ton with special trailer for carrying tank
1 truck-5-ton machine shop with tool trailer
1 truck-5-ton, L.C., water & spares trailer
1 automobile-Ford
2 motorcycles
