I've been researching the salvaging of tanks, and have been trying to find the first instance that a Mark I-IV was captured by the Germans.
I thought it might have been early on, as after the Somme there were some 58 tanks, with at least 2 near the German front. Wouldn't it provide an ample situation for them to capture the tank? I've come across instances at Cambrai, but nothing of any before that battle.
So my question is, when was the first instance of a British tank being captured? If so when and what tank was it?
Fantastic stuff! Christy Campbell mentions Tom Bernard's diary existing, a new one which he noted some of his previous actions in. Will have a look around to try and find it on the internet.
edit: just seen you mentioned they are in a Museum, is this the Tank Museum in Bovington?
