QF 4.7 inch gun on Woolwich carriage

Hello everyone! This is my first post on Landships, but I read forum from time to time during couple months.

Well, about subject. I have seen this image some time ago and found it interesting. Then I started to search another photos of that gun. And finally found it. Here it is — http://www.panoramio.com/photo/52844418

Resolution of the photo is big, so you can see some details.

Similar (could be NOT Woolwich, but anyway) gun mount in Shilo Artillery Museum. Many photos.

The most famous use of these guns was by the Naval Division in the Boer War and the Boxer Rebellion.  Originally a naval gun, it was not too popular with ground troops as it was heavy and cumbersome.  He also did the same with the "Long" 12 pdr  However, it was the only artillery piece is South Africa that could match the range of the Boer "Long Tom".  The carriages were built within 24 hours!!!!!

In both conflicts, Capt Percy Scott designed carriages and wheels and had them built so the guns could be moved.  He also designed a static base for them as well.

 

The race to Ladysmith by the Naval Division before it was completely besieged became the source of the annual enactment at the Royal Tattoo.
