There are images of two of these guns in the IWM - the second gun can be seen in the background of the attached.

Looks like a fairly standard fortress mounting from the 1890s. I wonder if the gun was recycled from a Belgian fortress.

There is a 1894 Belgian howitzer in Brisbane which was captured at Pozieres which is a Krupp carriage with a Belgian made

barrel.

I think we have a Russian 152mm M1877

These were captured from the Russians and used by German Landwehr Foot Artillery units.

There were two Russian M1877 siege guns - a heavier 190 pood and lighter 120 pood version.

The captured guns seem to be a pretty good match with the 120 pood version.

Thanks, Charlie. Great info. Kosar has both calling the 120p a "leichte Kanone" and the 190p a "schwere Kanone"

I agree the IWM guns seem to be the 120 pood type. Outstanding.

I will use this opportunity to remind everyone that I am restoring a sister piece to the Russian 152mm M1877, the Russian 107mm M1877 (42 Line Gun). My 107mm is missing the breech block, so I am looking for an original replacement or a detailed technical drawing of the breech block. If I can get a detailed technical drawing, I can build a reproduction breech.

If you have either please let me know.

Reproduction wheels for the Russian 107mm M1877 (42 Line Gun) are being built by Matt Switlik based on originals in the Finnish Army museum collection. Hopefully, I will have them this Fall.

Gentlemen, I am pleased to report that the IWM responded to my email in which I described our discussion about the gun in these photographs. I have cut/paste the reply here from the Assistant Curator of the Photograph Archive, IWM:

"Thank you for getting in touch about these images. We’ve had a look at your attachments and while the two weapons are extremely similar in appearance, we agree that you and your colleagues’ identification is probably correct.

I have amended our internal catalogue to state that these images show an Obukhov gun. These edits should become visible in our online public catalogue following the next automatic data update.

Please convey my thanks to the other members of your forum, and let them know that future queries regarding photograph captions should be directed to me at photoadmin@iwm.org.uk. We can’t be experts on every subject so it’s good to have input from interested members of the public.
