Looking at some of the videos on YouTube (thanks philthydirtyanimal) I am struck by the lack of unditching beams, especially on the Mk. 5*.

Did 1918 mean that the ground conditions were such that they were necessary or what?

I suppose one question is, did the beams work well enough to outweigh the hassels of attatching them?
The battles of 1918 were generally on the chalky, better drained terrain, rather than the mud of Flanders.
