Hi

BR 8 inch Armstrong BLR (203mm)

Were naval and coastal defense guns of the 1880s, but remained in service in many cases up to 1920 / 30.-

In Argentina there are three or four "survivors", and came as main armament on board the "Acorazado Alm. Brown " in the early years of the decade of 1880.-

The safeguarded should be one of the eight breech-loading guns BR 8 inch 11.5 ton. Armstrong BLR single (203mm) and were replaced on the battleship in 1897 by French guns Schneider-Canet.-

Its design was classic, carriage, over-carriage and brake friction with device compressor.-

They were used, and are still used, as "gate guardian" in the BIM3 Zarate, in the Naval War College in Vicente Lopez, etc., and in the early twentieth century (1911) it was one deposited outdoors and on pallets, in the arsenals of Zárate.

This canyon whose photo appears in books about the "History of the Naval Academy" (from H.F.Burzio) was mistaken for a Krupp 240 L35, and was presented as "proof" of the existence of a "battery installed" Krupp 240mm in Zárate.-

But whatever able to estimate dimensions realizes that for its size, length and volume is impossible that was really a K240, this increases the possibility that there really been an Armstrong 8 " of the ironclad.-

You can compare its size by referencing the size of people, and also check the resemblance of its barrel profile.-

You also see a winch of similar design to that used other guns Armstrong 8 "

The Chilean Navy also bought guns Armstrong 8 "to replace Armstrong 9" muzzle loading carrying in their “Blindados” Blanco Encalada y Cochrane, in the years 1888/1889, which were using hydrodynamic brakes and their carriages were also more compact .-

Hi

An known person asked me how could discard the Krupp 240mm if looked so little of the canyon in the photo. And I rule it out just for that.

If overlap the profile of K240 (taken from a photo of the Puerto Belgrano Battery) on that photo you will see that you should see at least part of the breech block

Besides the Krupp 240 has a larger and higher gun carriage, and crane for projectiles is a very different design

Regards

Eduardo
