These were 6 inch naval guns mounted on British 8 inch howitzer carriages purchased by the U.S. in WW 1 and assigned to the Panama Canal defenses. Between the World Wars they were modernized and pneumatic tires replaced the cast iron wheels. In 1939 they were obsolete and about to be sold for scrap. Brail bought 99 of these guns a. In Brazilian service they had a rather checkered .The 6 inch shells they employed were not manufactured in Brazil and the U.S. could only supply small quantities. As a result only two artillery groups (1 battery of 6 inch guns, 1 battery of Sperry Rand Projectors) were created. In the 1970s, one battery was donated to Paraguay. These guns had no hydraulic recoil mechanism.
