Stumbled across this:

I think we're all familiar with this photo, usually accepted as Gunther Burstyn:

Burstyn3.jpg

This photo, from a very reputable Austrian archive, is also said to be him:

Burstyn1.jpg

They don't look particularly like the same chap to me. The collar patches match - a wheel and wings, badge of Railway and Telegraph troops, 2 stars for lieutenant, but no explanation for the armband.

Some other views for comparison. The hairline is a bit more like the second pic.

Burstyn4.jpg

In later life:

Burstyn2.jpg

Can anyone identify the real Gunther Burstyn?

Solved, after discussion with the Austrian Photo Archive. A small clerical error, but here's the problem when misinfo gets into the system.

Werner Burstyn

This gent is Gunther Burstyn's younger brother, Werner. A slight mix-up at their end, picked up by Wikipedia. Wikipedia see no reason to delete it just because it's wrong. And so it spreads. And fools the makers of that terrible video Age of Tanks.
